Bid-Ask Spread

The gap between the highest price a buyer will pay (bid) and the lowest a seller will accept (ask).

Market makers earn the spread by buying at the bid and selling at the ask. Tighter spreads mean lower trading costs; the spread is the hidden cost behind 'commission-free' retail trading routed to wholesalers.
