Expense Ratio

The annual percentage of assets a fund charges to cover its operating costs.

A seemingly small expense ratio compounds dramatically over decades. The difference between a 1.0% and a 0.05% fund can consume a large fraction of an investor's final balance over a 30-year horizon, because every dollar paid in fees never compounds for the investor again.
