Twelve Seconds at Kitty Hawk: The First Powered Flight
On 17 December 1903, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the Wright brothers achieved the first sustained, controlled, powered flight of a heavier-than-air craft.
It lasted twelve seconds and covered a distance shorter than the wingspan of a modern airliner. It was also the moment humanity learned to fly.
Bicycle makers turned aeronauts
Wilbur and Orville Wright were brothers who ran a bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio. Rather than chasing raw engine power, they grasped that the central problem of flight was control — keeping a craft balanced and steerable in three dimensions. [1] Through years of kite and glider experiments, and tests in a wind tunnel they built themselves, they worked out a system of “wing-warping” that let a pilot bank and turn.
The first flights
On the morning of 17 December 1903, on the windswept dunes near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Orville lay at the controls of their powered Flyer and lifted off into a headwind. The first flight lasted about 12 seconds and covered roughly 120 feet (about 37 meters). [1] The brothers took turns through the day; the longest flight, by Wilbur, lasted 59 seconds and covered 852 feet. [2]
What made it count
Others had built craft that briefly left the ground, but the Wrights’ achievement was the first that was powered, sustained, and controlled — a machine that flew where its pilot directed it rather than merely hopping. [1] That combination is why 17 December 1903 marks the birth of the airplane.
From dunes to the world
The world was slow to believe. Public demonstrations a few years later, in the United States and France, finally convinced skeptics that controlled flight was real. [2] Within a single lifetime, the twelve-second hop at Kitty Hawk would grow into transatlantic airliners and, ultimately, spaceflight.
